If you know Papaya Salad ... This is the place to get in Grand Rapids!!! The BEST hands down! We drive clear across town if I'm having a craving & it's always as good as I remember. All of the dishes we've tried have been very very good, my fiancé is Laotian so we know authentic Lao & Thai - This is it!! Wait staff is also very friendly and never a long wait.

I ordered pad thai with chicken medium, the medium hot seemed a little hotter than medium to me. The service was decent and overall not a bad little place. I was sorry to see the Thai House restaurant close on 28th St SE in Cascade, they were really the Thai food benchmark in the area and we enjoyed dining there for several years. As far as Thai food goes in GR this may be about as good as it gets at the present time.

Really good thai food. The service could be better but the food is good. I always get the curry pad thai everywhere I go and use that as a gauge and Thai Chef is one of the best. Tried other dishes and have been pleasantly surprised. Spice levels are good and actually spicy (most places are not spicy at all).

I have been to this place in the past and have really enjoyed my meals. Yesterday I got some take out that was inedible. I got the Basil Delight and I did ask for it hot. Their "hot" is spicier that most places, and I understand that. The dish I got was so peppery that I could not eat it, not chili pepper hot, but black peppery hot. Black pepper was all I could taste, again I like chili hot but this was just horrible. I called to inquire and maybe it was the language barrier, but they said "ya that is the way it is supposed to be". Their policy is that they won't take back something that is too spicy, and I understand that, but again it wasn't too spicy, it was VERY peppery and they didn't understand or didn't care.

Some of the best thai I've had... period.

Without a doubt, my favorite Thai restaurant in the Grand Rapids area. The food is always delicious, authentic and flavorful. Service is usually pretty great. The spice, however, is inconsistent. I usually like it hot, but the "hot" option has ranged from tasting mild to making me want to keel over. I now order medium to stay safe. Their pad Thai is definitely my favorite, but I'm pretty obsessed with the basil and massaman curry here, too. I'd always recommend Thai Chef to anyone looking for good, well-priced and quick Thai food.

STAY AWAY! The restaurant should be called Thai Food in a Box. Everything was bland really looked cheap. The curry was runny was more like brown water mixed with grease. I love chicken and I love potatoes but I hated them in this Massaman dish. Let me direct you to a Thai place that does it right. Bangkok Taste in Jenison. I swear by that place and go there at least once a week. Their food is SOOO good. I will say it again do not waste your money. Go to Bangkok Taste in Jenison you will not regret it.

Great experience. I got the chicken pad Thai with veggies and crab wonton and it was amazing. I highly recommend going there.

Not authentic. Not good. They did not use traditional ingredients. Temperatures were not appropriate for the dishes served. Chicken fingers were used for satay. Service was also lacking. Charged full price for the equivalent of a side of noodles. I've lived in Thailand and half my family is Thai. This is not good. I will not be returning.

Really good Thai food, too bad I they don't serve alcohol, would love to enjoy a beer or glass of wine with their meals.

The chef here is great here! Every time me and my boyfriend come we are so pleased, maybe one of our favorite places to eat in gr.

Meh. It was average thai food, nothing special and not worth the 4 stars that led me to this place. Ordered the pad pak on the lunch special. Appreciated that we could get small size, but food was fairly bland even though I got medium spice. Just brown sauce and vegetables, not the thai flavors that I was looking for to pop. Husband ordered the appetizer combo. Fried spring rolls and rangoons were standard. Chicken satay was not amazing and the fried tofu was tasteless. Wouldn't come back here again. Oh, and they don't take Amex !

Very, very good food at a reasonable price. Ordering your food "hot" will not disappoint - it was very spicy and very tasty.

Review in a sentence: If you value quality over quantity with great service, this is the place to go! Let me start of with saying that I'm not a fan of Thai food. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about it that makes me place it towards the end of the list of my preferences for food. That said, after eating a late lunch/early dinner here, my opinion on Thai food has changed considerably. Thai Chef looks like a hole in the wall kind of place from outside, but the interior was surprisingly well-decorated - tastefully. The waitresses spoke perfect English and were attentive but not overbearing; they've got the "seat, drinks, order, checking in, bill" timing down! After ordering hot tea all around, I ordered the Chicken LoMein (Medium+ spicy level), my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Peanut Curry Noodles (Hot spicy level), and my boyfriend's father ordered the Pork Almond Entree (Medium spicy level). Each dish was under $9 before tax, so our bill after tax and tip came out to be just under $35. I was a little skeptical about how different the spicy levels would be, but there were clear differences between the three dishes. "Hot" had you feeling the heat as soon as you swallowed, but you didn't feel the heat in Medium+ until a third of the way through your meal. Medium was more of an added flare of taste rather than heat itself. All three of us were very happy with the quality of the food and really happy with how it tasted. If Goldilocks was looking for a perfect Thai meal, she wouldn't be going anywhere else. The sauces met that balance between being too salty and too bland. The food was surprisingly light, too - not a lot of oil and definitely no puddles of oily sauce. I got a taste of my boyfriend's Peanut Curry, and neither the peanut nor the curry overpowered the other. After tasting an almond from his father's dish, I concluded that the food was cooked to the perfect level where the nuts were cooked through. I usually don't finish my meal, even if it is really good, because it's usually too much food, but I cleaned my plate at this meal. I couldn't quite tell right away whether it was because portions were smaller than I typically experience or if it was just that good. An hour or so later, I'd have to say it was both. The portions were smaller than what I normally get when I eat out, but if given the opportunity to choose a place to eat again in this area of GR, I'd choose Thai Chef in a heartbeat. Even though portions were smaller than usual, the taste and quality of the meal far exceeded any Thai place I've had a meal (and that's saying a lot because I'm from California).

I love checking out new Thai places around town. Heard about this place a couple months ago so decided to check it. It's hidden in a little strip mall at Knapp's Corner. Cozy and comfortable inside. The service was great. We didn't have to wait long for our food, which was nice. It was a little on the pricier side...most dinner options coming in at $9-10. We started off with a spring roll, which was good. They were, unfortunately, out of a vegetarian spring roll option, so I resorted to the chicken spring roll. It was pretty good. I always get Pad Thai when I check out a new place to gauge how good the place may be and this was no different. To be honest, I've had better. To me, it seemed a little slimy, too much moisture or something. I guess I like my Pad Thai on the drier side. My friend got the Pad Pak. She liked the variety of veggies it had. We both agreed that their "medium spicy" could have been spicier. I might be up for trying something else at this place but I have a list of other Thai places I'd like to try and other favorite places to go before I come back here.

I might give this place 4 stars if I go back again - it's good! Close proximity to the theater make it an ideal spot for a pre-movie dinner, partly because it's fast. The decor is nice and clean, the service is efficient, the pad thai and kom ka gai was particularly yummy.

I go here for lunch all the time. Really reasonable prices, excellent quality food. I don't know why you would ever spend $7 at Wendy's when there is such good food close by. Usually ready in 10 mins. Definitely the best Thai restaurant I've found in Grand Rapids so far.

Best Thai I've ever had. Great family owned restaurant, they are so friendly. You have to get the peanut curry if you are a peanut lover! Dishes are on the spicy side, I don't like spicy and mild tends to be on the spicy side for me. Great prices, great food, great service. I will be going here forever, my friends and I can't get enough!

I have to start this review to share that I am fairly new to Thai food, I've been eating it for about 2 years now. Ever since I found my love for Thai food, I've been to several Thai places in GR and surrounding areas and haven't found a place that I think is better than Thai Chef. I usually get the Curry Pad Thai with chicken at medium heat at most places as a base to get a feel for if I'd like to head back and try out other dishes there, this dish at Thai Chef is awesome. The medium spicy level IMO is a perfect amount of spice that will give the dish a good hotness without taking away from the flavor. The Peanut Curry Noodle is also another really good dish and is another go-to dish for me here. When it comes to the heat there, order it a little lower than you think you'd like and ask them to bring out the spice tray and kick up the heat to your liking! Overall, aside from my obvious love of the dishes I have tried, the place is a good for lunch or dinner take out, it's traditional Thai food, no Chinese dishes here, and the prices are good IMO. 7 - 10 per dish and there's usually enough to share or grab a couple and share. I have highly recommended and will continue to recommend this place.

I eat here on a regular basis, I have never had a complaint. Take out is always fast and fresh with large portions. If you decide to eat in the staff is very friendly and attentive. Great Pattani (with Chicken or beef) and of course Pad Thai. Soups are good and loaded with veggies and tofu Give this place a try for a great meal! Always have left overs

Was in town from Ann Arbor for an event and happened into this place. It is really good. I had curried tofu and also tried some of the soup my partner ordered and both were much better than any of the Thai food we have had recently. Highly recommended.

The shrimp rolls were a great appetizer while determining what to order. The curry noodle was an excellent main dish. We ordered it medium which was spicy but not to the point of overpowering the variety of flavors. Fried bananas served with coconut ice cream was great, even for my wife who typically is not a coconut fan. We picked up a punch card on the way out and are looking forward to filling it.

Went for lunch and had the chef's special sesame chicken which was awesome. My wife had the drunken noodle and was excellent. Drunken noodle was not oily like we've had at other places, was probably the best we've had yet. Currently our fav Thai in G.R.
